Project Focus for 2026:

Chichester Tree Trail,

your guide to a diversity of trees in the city centre, for visitors and residents alike. Enjoy the current trail whilst we work on an update.

Community Tree Nursery,

growing trees from local seed to meet local needs. (Plot acquired February 2026; project webpage not yet live.)

Tree Terminus Road,

NEW for 2026 and a successor to our Mind the Gap and ChiTrees projects, resulting from the loss of street trees at this established industrial estate. We aim to work with Terminus Road businesses and organisations to restore a tree canopy that supports people and place in future. Please contact us for further information and if you would like to be involved.

Hedgerow Planting 2025,

the creation of new hedgerows in the green space bordering St Paul's Road/Otter Close at the top end of Parklands. We are now into the monitoring and establishment phase for these hedgerows.

Projects currently taking a back seat:

ChiTrees

helping Chichester understand the value of its urban trees

If we don't know what trees we have where, how can we understand and value what they're doing?

Chichester Tree Wardens' ChiTrees project aims to mobilise as many volunteers as possible to map and measure trees in our urban areas. The tree data collected is input into professionally-developed software to calculate:

  • how much carbon our trees are capturing and storing,
  • how they are improving our air quality,
  • the water management/flood risk mitigation they provide, and
  • the value of these services in economic terms.

Sign up to help  here and start collecting and contributing information on our local trees as and when suits you.

Latest news:
Tree recording took place in 2022 and 2023, but faltered in 2024, due to lack of time
. Moving forward, we welcome interest from volunteers wishing to understand and record trees in specific locations and will be using tree recording to support other projects.

Mind the Gap,

our mission to find space for trees in Chichester, choose, plant and grow the right trees for the space for our community and ecology as a whole.

Worried about the loss of trees in our city? Seen a space that's a perfect spot for a tree? Find out our progress with a project that aims to plant more trees in Chichester to benefit both people and planet (click image to left). And please let us know what gap(s) you've found.

MAY 2022: Tree-planting fundraiser launched for 2022/23.

MAY 2023: fundraiser DISCONTINUED.

Latest news:

So much has changed since we initiated this project! We continue to lose mature trees from our streetscapes and spaces, and really want to hear from you when you spot a gap, but are not anticipating creating a new general fundraiser. With more public authority emphasis on tree canopy cover, and Chichester District Council's Chichester District Tree Scheme moving beyond the confines of its initial pilot stage working with DEFRA, there is now some opportunity for funding for pot-grown trees of a size suitable for planting in urban spaces; street trees still require the use of West Sussex County Council's donate-a-tree scheme.
