Ooops!
It turns out your website editor has been singularly rubbish at updating the News page of this website! I beg your forgiveness and invite you to peruse other pages, include Events and Resources, where progress has been much more satisfactory.
As volunteers, Chichester Tree Wardens do what they can, when they can, in the context of whatever else is happening in their lives and the world around us and, frankly, what interests them most. If you love trees, why not find out how you can help? Do drop me a line at
info@treesinchi.org or text/call
07788 140698 (and chase up, if I don't respond - it may have arrived at a busy period and got lost amongst other communications).
Wishing you happiness in the trees around you,
Paula (Chatfield)

Tree of the Year
(voting closed 24th September 2020; The Woodland Trust)
A celebration of Britain's special trees and tree eye-candy for those of us who love trees! Cast your vote for a tree on this year's shortlist, and ponder if your community has a special tree to enter for the competition next year (the winning tree receives a £1000 Tree Care Award aimed at protecting/supporting it and celebrating a better future; short-listed trees receive a £500 Tree Care Award).
Global Biodiversity Outlook - 5th UN report
(15th September 2020 news reports)
The United Nations (UN) has given a new warning that action is needed now to protect the natural world.
It has proposed eight suggestions for improvements for people and governments to think about, to help both nature and ourselves by moving towards making the planet more sustainable. These include:
- Land and forests: protecting and restoring habitats and other wild areas to tackle climate change;
- Sustainable agriculture: redesigning the way we farm to reduce the harmful impact on nature through things like forest clearance and intensive use of fertilisers and pesticides which can be dangerous for the environment;
- Urban greening: making more space for nature in towns and cities, where almost three quarters of us live;
- A 'One Health' approach, which encompasses all eight improvement headings: managing our whole environment, whether it is urban, agricultural, forests or fisheries with the aim of promoting "a healthy environment and healthy people".

If you don't fancy wading through the Government consultation on a new England Tree Strategy, the Woodland Trust is making it easy to add your voice to theirs:
https://campaigns.woodlandtrust.org.uk/page/63577/action/1/
DEADLINE: 11th September 2020
Anyone can respond to the consultation so one of our volunteer Chichester Tree Wardens, Paula Chatfield, worked through the documentation to see what was involved. Her response, based on experience picked up as a Tree Warden and helped by the Tree Council's response (featured earlier on this webpage) can be downloaded as a pdf file below.
Paula found the consultation website pretty easy to use. The ability to save a draft response and come back to it at a later date was much appreciated because there were so many questions, lots to think about, and it took sooooo long! (The Woodland Trust reply option looks quite appealing in that context, although less detailed.)
Chichester Tree Wardens will now consider whether also to respond as a group. Do try to do so too, if you can.
