Trees in Chichester

Come! Walk through our city. You will be hard pushed to stand, outdoors in any part of our streets and public spaces, and NOT to see a tree. Not always in front of you but, if you turn 360 degrees, there will be a patch of green leaf or brown/grey bark somewhere.

Each tree tells a story, of careful planting or random seed, of space and air and water and time. From our streets, to our parks, our gardens and wild spaces, our urban forest is busy, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Chichester Tree Wardens are volunteers who keep an eye out for trees. Wherever we look, there is something to learn, from seedlings to ancient trees, city centre to rural fringes. We hope you will join us in looking at, and after, trees in Chichester and trees wherever you live.

Thank you! to everyone who supported us by attending one of our 2 events at the Festival of Chichester this year. We had conversations and a mini tree trail in Oaklands Park, alongside art workshops, during the day on Thursday 4th July 2024, and explored trees in Priory Park on the evening of Wednesday 10th July. Thank you too to our volunteers and sponsors who helped make these events happen, including Chichester Festival Theatre and Fiona Bell Currie (artist and volunteer Chichester Tree Warden) at Oaklands Park, Chichester Quakers for Priory Park, and to the volunteer team which runs the Festival of Chichester itself.

If you would like us to support an event you are planning, please get in touch. Our confidence is also growing in devising walks and talks. Or why not treat one or more of us to an informal walk and show us the trees you love? We'd love to hear from you.

If we don't know what trees we have where, how can we understand and value what they're doing?

Chichester Tree Wardens' ChiTrees project aims to mobilise as many volunteers as possible to map and measure trees in our urban areas. The tree data collected is input into professionally-developed software to calculate:

  • how much carbon our trees are capturing and storing,
  • how they are improving our air quality,
  • the water management/flood risk mitigation they provide, and
  • the value of these services in economic terms.

Sign up to help here and start collecting and contributing information on our local trees as and when suits you.

Tree recording took place in 2022 and 2023. We've been slow to get started in 2024, but expect to do more.

Worried about the loss of trees in our city? Seen a space that's a perfect spot for a tree? Find out our progress with a project that aims to plant more trees in Chichester to benefit both people and planet (click image to left). And please let us know what gap(s) you've found.
